How to save a recipe from a photo or a notebook

You do not have to retype a recipe from a notebook by hand. Add a photo to Receptli and you get an editable draft. The most important step stays with you: compare it with the original.

Our own example: a page from a family notebook, in Slovak, which we also use in the app demo.
  1. Take a readable photo

Lay the open notebook on a flat surface and shoot from above in even light. The title, all the ingredients and the whole method should be in the frame. A sharp photo without a shadow in the fold helps more than a crop that cuts off the quantities.

  2. Add the source to Receptli

In the app, add a recipe from the camera or from your gallery. If the recipe continues on the next page, add that page too. A screenshot or a PDF works as well. AI processing requires your consent.

  3. Compare the draft with the original

Check the quantities, units, oven temperature and number of servings in particular. Do not rely on a guess for an abbreviation or an unreadable number. Correct a wrong value and fill in a missing quantity only when you know it.

  4. Save and use the recipe

After checking, save the recipe to your library. Open it while cooking, add it to the meal plan or build your shopping from it. Keep the original notebook; Receptli is not an archive of source photos.

What helps with old handwriting

  • Photograph an unreadable passage again, closer and without glare. If you know what a family abbreviation means, add it while checking the draft.
  • When a page holds two recipes, take a separate shot of each. Checking the ingredients and the method gets easier.
  • Source photos are deleted within 24 hours after you save or discard the draft. Keep your own copy if you want the original handwriting in digital form too.
